Submissions: Final Run-through

Before you send off your manuscript, here are some final last second checks for you to make.

• Print it, and then reread it. It's good to let some time sit between your last writing session and your proof read. It's even better to get a few friends, family, teachers, colleagues to read through it. Make sure you check for PB style, such as punctuating S.D.C., and not as SDC.
• Check the general flow of it. It's different reading from a screen than from a sheet of paper. Make sure each sections flows into the next.
• Send in your printed submission, Unsolicited Manuscript form, and a copy on disk. Send it in print as well as e-mail form.
• It's also good form to write a cover letter to Wayne, tell him that you're excited about your submission, breifly describing it, and stating how much you appreciate him looking it over. Be sure to include your contact info (home address, home phone, e-mail) in case he needs to contact you. Some advice on the cover letter: Tell Wayne if he needs anything or has any suggestions or comments to let you know. Also, compose it like you would a cover letter for a job application, as in many ways this is one.
• You might not hear anything for 6 weeks or 6 months. This is normal, as their shop is pretty busy. After two weeks, call, e-mail, or write a letter to make sure they got your submission okay. I suggest calling, as it is the most direct, immediate way to do so, and you will get a pretty good response.
